Volunteering

The Sexual Assault – Domestic Violence Center has a number of ways to help. volunteer

Our volunteering program includes:

  • Crisis Line Volunteers
  • Children Group Assistants
  • Office Aide
  • Gardening Volunteers
  • Client Transportation
  • Special Events/Community Outreach
  • Moving/Delivering Volunteers
  • Shelter Aides/Maintenance
  • Newsletter Assistant Volunteers

Crisis Line Volunteers
Volunteers are on call for a 12-hour shift (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The dates and number of days on call depends on individual schedule. Crisis Line Volunteers must be available for at least one 12-hour shift a month. Crisis Calls are received at our shelter. The shelter staff determines if the caller needs a direct response, if not, the caller’s name and number is taken. The shelter staff then calls the volunteer on call and relays the information. Then the Crisis Line Volunteer is required to anonymously call the caller and assist the caller, using training that each volunteer receives prior to being placed on the crisis line calendar.

Children’s Group Assistant
The Children’s Group Assistant aides the needs of the Children’s Advocate during the Children’s Support Group.

Office Aide
Volunteers are needed to assist in our Hutchinson, Lyons, McPherson, and Kingman offices. This position can be part-time or full-time. Each office is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed weekends and holidays). Some tasks that office aides will be expected to perform are answering phones, filling, greeting clients, copying, and sorting donations.

Gardening Volunteers
Gardening Volunteers help year-round at maintaining the Meditation Garden, flowerbeds, and shrubs. These volunteers will be required to have a background check and screened by the shelter manager.

male volunteerClient Transportation
Volunteers are needed to transport clients to appointments, job searching, apartment locations, grocery stores, etc. The Transportation Volunteers have the ability to set their hours, limit miles, and determine locations that are available for transportation.

Special Events/Community Outreach
Special Events/Community Outreach Volunteers help with year round activities such as awareness activities, fundraising, health fairs, collecting old cell-phones, 911 crisis phones, and special projects.

Moving/Delivering Volunteers
Moving and Delivering Volunteers help with moving donations from donor homes to storage units or delivering donations to client homes. Volunteers are also asked to help with moving/delivery needs in our offices. Moving/Delivering Volunteers are capable to set own day/time schedules, mile restrictions, and weight limits.

Shelter Aides / Maintenance
Shelter Aides assist when the shelter requires help covering the schedules, sorting through donations, and other tasks that the shelter manager needs. Maintenance Volunteers help with the upkeep, repairs, remolding, painting, and other needs that the shelter may need to obtain a safe secure place for victims.

Newsletter Assistant Volunteers
Newsletter Assistant Volunteers partner with the Volunteer Coordinator to produce a quarterly newsletter that is sent out to community supporters, board members, and donors.

All volunteers must give permission and pay $13 for a complete background check.

Anyone 18 years of age or older is eligible to apply for the volunteer program. No prior training or experience is necessary to volunteer. A person who has been a victim of sexual assault or domestic violence is required to wait (1) year from the time of the last incident before they may apply to volunteer with this agency.

Change Happens Because of Volunteers
Volunteers are the treasure chest of our agency. Besides being essential they help promote awareness, enhance the effectiveness, and improve the understanding of issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault. They also provide valuable insight through first hand experience.
